Which towns do we cover in Fife?
Supplies across most of Fife are soft. That leaves you free to choose matt black, brushed brass or clear glass without worrying much about limescale. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. Fitted furniture suits the many Dunfermline bathrooms that have to hold towels, toiletries and cleaning things for a whole household.
What the job includes
- A free home survey with measurements, photos and a check of your water pressure, drainage and ventilation
- Fitting of the furniture, worktop, sanitaryware and glass, then silicone, testing and a clean handover
- Layout options drawn to your room, including where the furniture run, bath or shower and towel rail will go
- Boarding, tanking in the wet areas, wall and floor tiling
- Supply of the suite, fitted furniture, worktop, brassware, tiles and accessories
- Electrical work by a qualified electrician: lighting, extractor fan, shaver socket or heating, tested and certified
Decisions to make first
Wall-hung or floor-standing
Wall-hung units show more floor and look lighter; floor-standing units give more storage and suit uneven walls.
Tiling height
Tiling just the wet areas keeps the cost down. Full-height tiling looks better and is easier to wipe clean.
Worktop
Laminate is the budget choice, quartz-effect and solid surface resist water and stains, and a moulded basin-and-top in one piece has no joints to clean.
Furniture finish
Matt or gloss lacquer, wood-effect, painted shaker or handleless. Darker finishes hide marks; lighter ones make a small room feel bigger.
Rules that apply in Scotland
Like-for-like bathroom refits do not need planning permission. Electrical work in a room with a bath or shower must meet BS 7671, with RCD protection on every circuit and IP-rated fittings in the zones around the bath and shower. New toilets, taps and showers must meet the water fittings rules where you live, which limit flush volumes and stop dirty water flowing back into the mains.
In Scotland, building standards apply instead of Part P. A straight refit rarely needs a building warrant, but forming a new bathroom, altering drainage or structural work may. Electrical work should still be tested and certified to BS 7671.
