Which towns do we cover in Gwent?
Hardness differs from one part of Gwent to the next. Easy-clean glass and good-quality brassware are money well spent. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. Whether your Newport bathroom is a compact box room or a larger main bathroom, the layout starts from measurements taken on site.
What the job includes
- Electrical work by a qualified electrician: lighting, extractor fan, shaver socket or heating, tested and certified
- Boarding, tanking in the wet areas, wall and floor tiling
- Layout options drawn to your room, including where the furniture run, bath or shower and towel rail will go
- Supply of the suite, fitted furniture, worktop, brassware, tiles and accessories
- Strip-out of the old bathroom and removal of the waste
- First and second-fix plumbing, including concealed cistern frames and new isolation valves
Decisions to make first
Heating
A heated towel rail is standard. Electric underfloor heating under the tiles makes the room comfortable and dries the floor quickly.
Wall-hung or floor-standing
Wall-hung units show more floor and look lighter; floor-standing units give more storage and suit uneven walls.
Worktop
Laminate is the budget choice, quartz-effect and solid surface resist water and stains, and a moulded basin-and-top in one piece has no joints to clean.
Bath, shower or both
Keep a bath for children or soaking, swap it for a walk-in shower if no one uses it, or plan both if the room is big enough.
Rules that apply in Wales
Like-for-like bathroom refits do not need planning permission. Electrical work in a room with a bath or shower must meet BS 7671, with RCD protection on every circuit and IP-rated fittings in the zones around the bath and shower. New toilets, taps and showers must meet the water fittings rules where you live, which limit flush volumes and stop dirty water flowing back into the mains.
Wales has its own version of Part P, and more bathroom electrical work is notifiable there than in England. Use a registered electrician who will notify the work and give you a certificate.
