Which towns do we cover on the Isle of Wight?

Supplies across most of the Isle of Wight are hard. We plan easy-clean glass, rimless toilets and finishes that do not show limescale. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. If your Newport bathroom has pipes boxed in at odd angles, a fitted run is often the neatest way to hide them for good.

What the job includes

  • A free home survey with measurements, photos and a check of your water pressure, drainage and ventilation
  • Strip-out of the old bathroom and removal of the waste
  • First and second-fix plumbing, including concealed cistern frames and new isolation valves
  • Fitting of the furniture, worktop, sanitaryware and glass, then silicone, testing and a clean handover
  • Layout options drawn to your room, including where the furniture run, bath or shower and towel rail will go
  • Electrical work by a qualified electrician: lighting, extractor fan, shaver socket or heating, tested and certified

Decisions to make first

Wall-hung or floor-standing

Wall-hung units show more floor and look lighter; floor-standing units give more storage and suit uneven walls.

Bath, shower or both

Keep a bath for children or soaking, swap it for a walk-in shower if no one uses it, or plan both if the room is big enough.

Heating

A heated towel rail is standard. Electric underfloor heating under the tiles makes the room comfortable and dries the floor quickly.

Worktop

Laminate is the budget choice, quartz-effect and solid surface resist water and stains, and a moulded basin-and-top in one piece has no joints to clean.

Rules that apply in England

Like-for-like bathroom refits do not need planning permission. Electrical work in a room with a bath or shower must meet BS 7671, with RCD protection on every circuit and IP-rated fittings in the zones around the bath and shower. New toilets, taps and showers must meet the water fittings rules where you live, which limit flush volumes and stop dirty water flowing back into the mains.

In England, new circuits and most electrical changes in a bathroom are notifiable under Part P, so they must be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. If you are adding a new extractor fan, Approved Document F gives 15 litres per second as the usual intermittent extract rate.

What is the difference between a fitted bathroom and a normal bathroom?

In a fitted bathroom the basin, WC and storage are built into one continuous run of furniture, with the cistern and pipes hidden behind panels and a worktop across the top. A standard bathroom uses separate pieces, such as a pedestal basin and close-coupled toilet, which leave gaps and visible pipework.
