Working in March
As well as March itself (PE15), we survey in Wisbech, Ely and Peterborough.
March gets the same process as anywhere else: a free survey at your home and a written, itemised quote. We can work alongside an occupational therapist assessment for your March home, so the rails and seat go where they are needed. If you are applying to your council for a grant, we provide an itemised written quote for your March home to go with the application.
Water across much of Cambridgeshire is very hard. If your supply in March is the same, limescale on shower glass and heads is a real issue: easy-clean glass, rub-clean nozzles and a squeegee make a big difference. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier.
What the job includes
- Removal of the bath and a level-access or low-profile shower in its place, or a full level-floor wet room
- Lever taps, contrasting colours for rails and fittings, and good lighting for people with low vision
- A comfort-height WC, with support rails where needed
- Slip-resistant floor tiles or safety flooring that grips when wet
Decisions to make first
Seat
A wall-mounted fold-down seat saves space and stays put. A freestanding shower stool is portable but takes floor space and can shift.
Low tray or level floor
A low-profile tray with a very shallow lip suits someone who can step a little. A tiled level floor falling to a drain is needed for a wheelchair or wheeled shower chair.
Rules that apply in England
In England, a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council can pay up to £30,000 towards adaptations such as a level-access shower. Fitting a new electric shower, or any other new circuit or wiring change in the bathroom, is notifiable under Part P.
