Which towns do we cover in Cambridgeshire?

Most of Cambridgeshire has very hard water. We plan easy-clean glass, rimless toilets and finishes that do not show limescale. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. Whether your Peterborough bathroom is a narrow galley or a square main room, we show you whether a separate shower would fit before you decide.

What the job includes

  • New pipework, wastes and isolation valves, plus a thermostatic shower valve so the temperature holds when someone runs a tap
  • Strip-out of the old suite and tiles, with the waste taken away by a licensed waste carrier
  • Lights, extractor fan and towel rail wired by a qualified electrician, tested and certified
  • Moisture-resistant boarding and tanking around the bath and shower before any tiling
  • Final silicone, a test of every tap and waste, and a clean handover
  • Wall and floor tiling, with a floor finish chosen to grip under wet feet

Decisions to make first

Floor

Matt or textured porcelain is the hardest-wearing option. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is warmer, quieter and cheaper to lay. Avoid polished tiles where children climb out of the bath.

Bath shape

A standard 1700 mm bath fits most rooms. A shower bath widens at one end to give more standing room under the shower; a double-ended bath puts the waste in the middle so two children can share without one sitting on the plug.

Storage

A vanity under the basin, a tall unit or a mirror cabinet. High-level or lockable storage keeps medicines and cleaning products out of reach of small children.

Bath material

Reinforced acrylic is warm to the touch and light on the floor. Steel enamel is harder-wearing and feels more solid, but it draws heat from the water faster.

Rules that apply in England

Refitting a family bathroom in the same room does not need planning permission. The electrics must meet BS 7671, with 30 mA RCD protection on every circuit in the room and at least IPX4 fittings in the zone above the bath, up to 2.25 m. The water fittings rules in each nation limit a new WC to a 6-litre flush and require protection against dirty water flowing back into the supply.

In England, any new circuit, or any change to the wiring in a room with a bath or shower, is notifiable under Part P. Part G limits the hot water at a new bath to 48 °C only in a new dwelling or one created by change of use; it does not apply to a replacement bath in an existing house, but a thermostatic valve is a sensible choice where children bathe.

What is the most hard-wearing floor for a family bathroom?

Porcelain tiles are the most hard-wearing floor for a family bathroom: they do not absorb water and are hard to scratch. Choose a matt or textured finish so wet feet do not slip. Luxury vinyl tile is warmer underfoot and costs less, but it can be dented and needs a perfectly flat subfloor.
