Which towns do we cover in Norfolk?
Supplies across most of Norfolk are very hard. We plan easy-clean glass, rimless toilets and finishes that do not show limescale. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. We survey in Norwich before quoting, so the bath, shower and storage are planned around your actual walls, window and soil stack.
What the job includes
- A layout that keeps a full-size bath, with options for a shower over it or a separate enclosure if the room allows
- Strip-out of the old suite and tiles, with the waste taken away by a licensed waste carrier
- A free home survey covering room sizes, the soil stack position, your boiler or cylinder type and water pressure
- Lights, extractor fan and towel rail wired by a qualified electrician, tested and certified
- Moisture-resistant boarding and tanking around the bath and shower before any tiling
- Wall and floor tiling, with a floor finish chosen to grip under wet feet
Decisions to make first
Storage
A vanity under the basin, a tall unit or a mirror cabinet. High-level or lockable storage keeps medicines and cleaning products out of reach of small children.
Shower over the bath or separate
A shower over the bath with a fixed or hinged screen is the most space-efficient. A separate enclosure needs roughly another square metre of floor but means the bath queue no longer holds up the shower queue.
Bath shape
A standard 1700 mm bath fits most rooms. A shower bath widens at one end to give more standing room under the shower; a double-ended bath puts the waste in the middle so two children can share without one sitting on the plug.
Floor
Matt or textured porcelain is the hardest-wearing option. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is warmer, quieter and cheaper to lay. Avoid polished tiles where children climb out of the bath.
Rules that apply in England
Refitting a family bathroom in the same room does not need planning permission. The electrics must meet BS 7671, with 30 mA RCD protection on every circuit in the room and at least IPX4 fittings in the zone above the bath, up to 2.25 m. The water fittings rules in each nation limit a new WC to a 6-litre flush and require protection against dirty water flowing back into the supply.
In England, any new circuit, or any change to the wiring in a room with a bath or shower, is notifiable under Part P. Part G limits the hot water at a new bath to 48 °C only in a new dwelling or one created by change of use; it does not apply to a replacement bath in an existing house, but a thermostatic valve is a sensible choice where children bathe.
