Which towns do we cover in Wiltshire?
Water across much of Wiltshire is hard. We plan easy-clean glass, rimless toilets and finishes that do not show limescale. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. If you have young children at home in Swindon, we can talk through a bath that is easy to lean over, a slip-resistant floor and high-level storage.
What the job includes
- Strip-out of the old suite and tiles, with the waste taken away by a licensed waste carrier
- Lights, extractor fan and towel rail wired by a qualified electrician, tested and certified
- A layout that keeps a full-size bath, with options for a shower over it or a separate enclosure if the room allows
- New pipework, wastes and isolation valves, plus a thermostatic shower valve so the temperature holds when someone runs a tap
- Supply of the bath, basin, WC, brassware, shower, screen, tiles and heated towel rail
- Wall and floor tiling, with a floor finish chosen to grip under wet feet
Decisions to make first
Shower over the bath or separate
A shower over the bath with a fixed or hinged screen is the most space-efficient. A separate enclosure needs roughly another square metre of floor but means the bath queue no longer holds up the shower queue.
Floor
Matt or textured porcelain is the hardest-wearing option. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is warmer, quieter and cheaper to lay. Avoid polished tiles where children climb out of the bath.
Storage
A vanity under the basin, a tall unit or a mirror cabinet. High-level or lockable storage keeps medicines and cleaning products out of reach of small children.
Bath material
Reinforced acrylic is warm to the touch and light on the floor. Steel enamel is harder-wearing and feels more solid, but it draws heat from the water faster.
Rules that apply in England
Refitting a family bathroom in the same room does not need planning permission. The electrics must meet BS 7671, with 30 mA RCD protection on every circuit in the room and at least IPX4 fittings in the zone above the bath, up to 2.25 m. The water fittings rules in each nation limit a new WC to a 6-litre flush and require protection against dirty water flowing back into the supply.
In England, any new circuit, or any change to the wiring in a room with a bath or shower, is notifiable under Part P. Part G limits the hot water at a new bath to 48 °C only in a new dwelling or one created by change of use; it does not apply to a replacement bath in an existing house, but a thermostatic valve is a sensible choice where children bathe.
