Working in March

As well as March itself (PE15), we survey in Wisbech, Ely and Peterborough.

March gets the same process as anywhere else: a free survey at your home and a written, itemised quote. For shower rooms in March, we check the water pressure and hot-water system at the survey, because that decides how well the shower will perform. If your second bathroom in March is too narrow for a bath, a long walk-in tray can often fit along the same wall.

Most of Cambridgeshire has very hard water. If your supply in March is the same, limescale on shower glass and heads is a real issue: easy-clean glass, rub-clean nozzles and a squeegee make a big difference. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier.

What the job includes

  • A survey of water pressure and flow, the hot-water system and the floor where the tray or former will sit
  • A thermostatic shower valve, exposed or concealed, with a fixed head, a handset or both
  • Tanking to the shower area, then wall and floor tiling
  • A low-profile tray or a tiled level floor, with the waste positioned for a good fall

Decisions to make first

Tray or level floor

A low-profile stone-resin tray is quicker to fit and costs less. A tiled level floor looks seamless but needs a former, tanking and more floor preparation.

Glass

8 mm toughened glass is the usual standard for a walk-in panel. An easy-clean coating helps a great deal in hard-water areas.

Rules that apply in England

In England, any change to the wiring in the shower room, or a new circuit for an electric shower, is notifiable under Part P. If you are replacing the fan, keep it at least as effective as the old one; Approved Document F gives 15 litres per second intermittent for a bathroom.

Shower rooms in March: questions

How much should I budget for a shower room in March?

A shower room in March usually costs £4,800–£9,500 including VAT. Expect the lower end for a like-for-like job with standard products, and the upper end if things move or you choose premium finishes. Your quote is itemised and fixed in writing once agreed.

Do you cover PE15 in March?

Yes. We cover all of March, including PE15, and nearby Wisbech, Ely and Peterborough. Survey visits are free and arranged at a time that suits you.

Is the water hard in March?

Most of Cambridgeshire has very hard water. If your supply in March is the same, limescale on shower glass and heads is a real issue: easy-clean glass, rub-clean nozzles and a squeegee make a big difference. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier.

Who handles building control for a shower room in March?

Building control for March is handled by the local council or an approved inspector. If your job needs sign-off — for example a new circuit, new drainage or a new extractor where there was none — we tell you at the survey and handle the notification as part of the work.

What is the difference between a shower room and a wet room?

A shower room has a tray, or a shower area with its own screen, and only the shower area is waterproofed. A wet room has a fully tanked floor laid to fall to a drain, so the whole room can get wet. A shower room usually costs less and is quicker to fit. Our guide to wet rooms and walk-in showers compares them.
