Which towns do we cover in Hertfordshire?

Most of Hertfordshire has very hard water. If your supply in Watford is the same, limescale on shower glass and heads is a real issue: easy-clean glass, rub-clean nozzles and a squeegee make a big difference. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. For shower rooms in Watford, we check the water pressure and hot-water system at the survey, because that decides how well the shower will perform.

What the job includes

  • An enclosure, walk-in panel or frameless screen in toughened safety glass
  • Tanking to the shower area, then wall and floor tiling
  • A low-profile tray or a tiled level floor, with the waste positioned for a good fall
  • A thermostatic shower valve, exposed or concealed, with a fixed head, a handset or both
  • Removal of the old bath and suite, waste removal, testing and handover
  • A basin and WC to suit the space, freestanding or set into a fitted furniture run

Decisions to make first

Tray size

A 1200 by 800 mm or 1400 by 900 mm tray with a single panel makes a comfortable walk-in. Go as long as the room allows; length does more than width to keep spray inside.

Storage

With no bath, there is often space for a full-width vanity unit or a tall cupboard for towels.

Tray or level floor

A low-profile stone-resin tray is quicker to fit and costs less. A tiled level floor looks seamless but needs a former, tanking and more floor preparation.

Drain

A centre waste in a tray is the norm. A linear drain along one wall lets a tiled floor fall one way, so large tiles can run through.

Rules that apply in England

Turning a bathroom into a shower room does not need planning permission. The electrics must meet BS 7671: 30 mA RCD protection on every circuit, at least IPX4 fittings in zone 1 above the tray up to 2.25 m, or IPX5 where water jets are used, and no ordinary sockets within 3 m of zone 1. A shower pump can only be used on a gravity system with a cold tank, never connected directly to the mains.

In England, any change to the wiring in the shower room, or a new circuit for an electric shower, is notifiable under Part P. If you are replacing the fan, keep it at least as effective as the old one; Approved Document F gives 15 litres per second intermittent for a bathroom.

Shower rooms in Hertfordshire: questions

How much does a shower room cost in Hertfordshire?

A shower room in Hertfordshire typically costs £4,800–£9,500 including VAT, based on East of England prices. The free survey and itemised written quote give you the exact figure for your home.

Which towns in Hertfordshire do you cover?

We cover the whole of Hertfordshire, including Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Cheshunt, Hatfield and Bishops Stortford. If your town is not listed, we still cover it — get in touch with your postcode.

How long does a shower room take?

Most jobs take 4–8 working days on site once the products have arrived. We confirm a start date and a day-by-day plan when you approve the quote.

Is the water hard in Hertfordshire?

Most of Hertfordshire has very hard water. If your supply in Watford is the same, limescale on shower glass and heads is a real issue: easy-clean glass, rub-clean nozzles and a squeegee make a big difference. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier.

What shower suits my water system?

It depends on your hot water. A combi boiler or unvented cylinder supplies mains pressure to a thermostatic mixer. A tank-fed system may need a pump, which must only be used on gravity systems. An electric shower heats cold mains water and suits a home without much stored hot water. See choosing a shower.
