Which towns do we cover in Wiltshire?

Supplies across most of Wiltshire are hard. Hard water leaves white marks on dark grout and gloss tiles, so matt finishes and stain-resistant grout are the practical choice. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier. If your Swindon home has a suspended timber floor, insulation boards under the mat stop heat disappearing into the void below.

What the job includes

  • Bringing the system up to temperature gradually once the adhesive and grout have cured
  • A dial, programmable or smart thermostat, with the supply RCD protected, tested and certified by a qualified electrician
  • Insulation boards over the subfloor, so heat goes up into the tiles rather than down into the joists or screed
  • The electric mat or cable laid to the open floor, kept clear of where the WC, bath and fixed furniture will sit
  • For wet systems, pipes in low-profile boards or screed connected to a manifold or single-zone kit, with any boiler work done by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Resistance and insulation tests on the mat before, during and after tiling, with the readings recorded

Decisions to make first

Floor finish

Tiles and stone pass heat through well. LVT and vinyl can work, but check the maximum floor temperature the flooring maker allows.

Mat or loose cable

Mats are quickest on square, open floors. Loose cable is easier to route around awkward shapes, pipe boxing and a curved shower area.

Electric or wet

Electric is cheaper to install and quick to lay in one room. Wet costs more upfront but is usually cheaper to run where it is fed by a gas boiler or heat pump.

Insulation board thickness

Thicker boards warm up faster and lose less heat downwards, but raise the floor; the right choice depends on the door threshold and the next room.

Rules that apply in England

Electric underfloor heating in a bathroom must be on a circuit with 30 mA RCD protection under BS 7671, and the thermostat is positioned to suit the bathroom zones. There is no separate approval for the heating itself, but it should have its own thermostat and timer so it only runs when needed, and the electrical work must meet BS 7671 — in England and Wales it is notifiable as bathroom electrical work. Any work on a gas boiler for a wet system must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

In England, a new circuit for underfloor heating is notifiable under Part P, and so is connecting it to an existing circuit in a room with a bath or shower. The electrician either self-certifies through a competent person scheme or the work is notified to building control.

Underfloor heating in Wiltshire: questions

How much does bathroom underfloor heating cost in Wiltshire?

Bathroom underfloor heating in Wiltshire typically costs £700–£2,600 including VAT, based on South West England prices. The free survey and itemised written quote give you the exact figure for your home.

Which towns in Wiltshire do you cover?

We cover the whole of Wiltshire, including Swindon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Melksham, Warminster, Calne and Westbury. If your town is not listed, we still cover it — get in touch with your postcode.

How long does bathroom underfloor heating take?

Most jobs take 1–2 working days (added to a fit) on site once the products have arrived. We confirm a start date and a day-by-day plan when you approve the quote.

Is the water hard in Wiltshire?

Supplies across most of Wiltshire are hard. Hard water leaves white marks on dark grout and gloss tiles, so matt finishes and stain-resistant grout are the practical choice. Hardness varies street by street, so check the figure for your postcode with your water supplier.

Is electric underfloor heating expensive to run in a bathroom?

Running cost depends on the heated area, the insulation under the mat, how long it runs and your electricity tariff. As an example, a 150 W per m² mat covering 3 m² draws 450 W, so two hours a day uses about 0.9 kWh. A timer and floor sensor stop it running when nobody is using the room.
